AN APPLE A DAY: A THING OR TWO TO KNOW + TASTY RECIPES

I make sure I’m eating one of these guys daily but I’m pretty careful about which one’s I’m purchasing and here’s why…

  • This little nutrient rich fella made it on EWG’s 2015 Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce list as one of the dirtiest (most pesticide-contaminated) for the FIFTH year in a row

It’s because of this that I add these guys on my “organic only” shopping list; after all to exclude them entirely would mean that I’m missing out on all this goodness jam packed into this one little guy!

  • Vitamin B6

  • Vitamin C

  • Iron

  • Potassium

  • Phosphorus

  • Calcium

  • Sodium

  • Sulfur

  • Magnesium

  • Boron

  • Fibre

  • Zinc

  • Copper

Apples, with the skin on, will provide about 3.5 grams of fibre; so just one apple provides us with about 17% of our daily fibre requirements.

This mighty little fruit also contains quercitin; a phytonutrient with anti-inflammatory properties and along with all of the nutrients listed above will help to support:

  • Our colon health

  • Our cardiovascular health

  • Our immune health

So be sure to incorporate that apple a day into your plan but if you aren’t able to purchase organic then be sure to wash well and peel (even if it diminishes the fibre content) prior to consuming in order to reduce pesticide exposure.

Apples should keep well in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks… but heh who’s keeping them sitting around uneaten for that long anyways! If you do find yourself saving half your apple for later in the day though just rub a little water and lemon on it and it won’t brown.

And if you want a nice switch from eating it on it’s own, try out some of the great recipes here
