ACID REFLUX: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AND WAYS YOU CAN EASE THAT "BURNING FEELING"
It’s a common problem experienced by many; that burning feeling caused by your stomach acid flowing up into the esophagus causing discomfort and (when not addressed) possible damage to the esophageal lining.
If this bothers you, it’s very likely that you will relate with some (and possibly all) of the following symptoms:
Burning sensation at the back of the throat
Painful or burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest, at times radiating to the back (heartburn)
Breathing difficulties
Hoarseness in the morning
Excessive belching is common
Food feels stuck at back of throat, tightness
Dry cough
Bad breath
Did you know that quite often the culprit is TOO LITTLE stomach acid and not TOO MUCH as most people would naturally think; the often “go to” antacids for relief can actually be causing more problems as they tend to prevent the production of stomach acid.
Here are some easy ways to help, that you can easily fit into your daily/weekly routine:
AVOID THE FOLLOWING FOOD ITEMS
Chocolate Fatty and deep fried foods
Pickled and smoked foods Salt preserved foods
Hot peppers Mustard
Soft drinks Vinegar (except apple cider vinegar)
Peppermint Coffee
Fruit juices Alcohol
These prevent the esophageal sphincter from working properly.
AND TRY SOME OF THESE TO ALLEVIATE THE SYMPTOMS
Eat smaller meals more frequently - The more the stomach is stretched by food, the higher the tendency to reflux.
Eat less fat - Acid Reflux is also increased by eating fatty meals as fat delays gastric emptying.
Eat dinner earlier - Try to avoid large meals in the evening.
Avoid antacids – which only make the problem worse by depleting stomach acids
Fibre – Add 1 tablespoon of ground flax to your day. Add to yogurt, hot cereal, smoothies, etc.
